Some yarn & some exciting news.

I bought a whole pile of this grey cotton at the op shop last week.

I've never bought second hand yarn before because usually I don't have any idea if it is wool/cotton/acrylic etc and what ply it is. But luckily for me this pile was made up of lots and lots of little balls and some of them still had their label with the brand (which I recognised) and their details.

The first chance I got I crocheted up a beanie using Vallie's kids Olivia's butterfly pattern.

It was the first beanie I've ever crocheted that fit the desired recipient's head, although looking at it now, it probably could do with one more row.

I ended up dying the beanie after I had finished it using a dark grey dye and am pleased to say that cotton/microfiber dyes beautifully.

I might have a go at dying a whole chunk of it today for another project I have in mind. Any hints about dying yarn appreciated. I am a bit unsure how to do it without getting into one big knot.

A bit of exciting news before I go.

Australian Traveller magazine is out today and we have just been informed that out of 100 Australian Greatest Gourmet Experiences, our business, Daylesford Organics, has come sixth!!!!

I'll post more details on my Daylesford Organics blog once I've bought the magazine.

I hope you get some great news today too. XX

  1. Oh Wow, congratulations, what a great achievment. Well done.
With the yarn, I usually wind it around the back of a chair into hanks ('cos I don't have a niddy noddy), then tie it in several places around the hank. Dye it and dry it! It's easy to hang that way too. Have fun.

  7. How funny, I was just sitting here thinking about dying a dress & was thinking about dark grey & wondering where to get dye these days. Spottie? That little hat is the best, can you make bigger ones for lovely friends???? It's going to get cold soon honey. Hey, great to see you getting number 6! Can't wait to hear/see more xo

  9. What a great oppy find! I have tried crocheting that beanie before but with no luck. I might have to try again now that I am a bit more experienced! It looks fantastic! If you wanted it that one long longer, could you crochet a border around it in another colour?

Congratulations on the award too. 6th is awesome! Can't wait to hear more. :)

  10. Oh my gosh Kate!!! Sixth! That is totally totally TOTALLY awesome!!!
... and is it a little ironic too since six is a difficult number for your family?!?! Perhaps it is a sign that six aint that bad afterall.

  16. Ditto to what Sally said.
    6th is pretty darn good!

The beanie is gorgeous. I usually put the wool/acrylic against my cheek and if its itchy then its wool. Dont know if that helps.

Hope your laundry doesnt look as bad as mine after a stint of dying.

  35. hello,

First time on your blog. Do you have the pattern to the beanie that you crochet? I am a beginner at crochet but am obsessed with it and loved it. I have been wanting to crochet a hat for my 3 yr old but most of the patterns online are a little confusing. Do you mind sharing your pattern?

    Thank you

  39. Advice on dying - don't do it in the bath!! (that sounds really funny)

When I was about 13 I dyed our antique claw foot roll top bath bright pink when attempting to do some tie-dye. Fortunately mum was in on the act, in fact she was the one that got us into the mess if I remember rightly, so at least I didn't get into trouble :) have fun x
