My creative space.

Its so quiet in my creative space today. The big girls are back at school for the first time in weeks and Miss Pepper and I are pottering around, doing a bit of this and a bit of that.

First off was some hair for the dolly Amanda made her a while back. I've never sewn dolly hair before and just threaded strands of cotton through her head. Does anyone know how I can secure them now so they don't pull through?

I suppose she'll need some clothes now too.

Not content to just sit and watch me, Pepper decided she wanted to sew too, so we set her up with a hoop and off she went.

Then there were cupcakes to be baked.

And a few rows of The Rainbow Speckled Olearia to knit.

Its funny, I got so used to knitting with hot sweaty hands while we were away, that now I can't seem to get a grip on the wool and the whole experience is quite slippery.

My crochet ric-rac tutorial has been featured on the Craft Online magazine and on One Pretty Thing and I've started a Ravelry pattern page for it here. Wow and yay and oh my goodness!

Also sitting in my space today is an application to a gorgeous looking December market. But now I can't decide. Market or online shop?

So what's going on in your space today?
I'm off to Kirsty's to check it out and maybe then I'll unpack.
Have a happy Thursday. X

  1. It may be quiet in your space, but it certainly is busy! I love peper's stitching, clever little thing! And congratulations on your ric rac features, that's really exciting! I hope you are all adjusting ok to the cold after all that gorgeous warmth...

  2. Do the market, then if you have anything left it can be the start of your online store. With the doll hair, handstitch it in place down the part - use double thread and stitch from the bottom to the top and back down again. Yay for the ric-rac features too.

  3. Congratulations Kate on your ricrac feature! I would do a market and then see how it sells and try an online shop! Congrats to Miss Pepper too for trying out her creative side with sewing, how wonderful! The Olearia looks beautiful, gorgeous yarn!

  4. market or online store? do both, then those that look but don't buy at the market (which is lots of people) have somewhere to go when they come to their senses :)

  9. Kate, I would just knot the strands and give her a bit of a bobbly part, otherwise you could actually stitch each strand down with thread...

  10. I'm imagining a whole lot of ric-rac being generated around the world!

I would do the market to see how people respond (& if you are like me it gives you a deadline to work towards.....which I really need). Start the online shop even if you have nothing listed, so you have somewhere to direct folk to (they always ask). And as Michelle said you then have some stock to list if it doesn't sell. Good luck, I do so hope you will be selling some ric-rac (for those crochet-illiterate types like me)

  14. Hello! Thanks for calling at Planet Penny! I've been looking at all the lovely things you've been making. The ric-rac tutorial is great. The last doll I made I put the hair in with a felting needle so that it meshed with the stuffing. It wouldn't stand up to too much tugging tho' if it's for a little one. Happy making!

  15. Well done on the ricrac features. Love your new olearia - gorgeous yarn. And I say Market. I find markets so much easier than online store 'cos you don't have to take photos of everything and then describe everything or spend too much time on the computer. And you can meet your customers at the market too. I just love the atmosphere of markets. Which market are you thinking of doing?

  16. Oh yeah and for the hair, can you thread it into the head and then tie it on???

  17. market for the dresses? Hmmmmm I guess the thing with a market is you need lots of stock to make it look good, whereas with a little online shop you can just have a few things and add to it gradually. xx
PS and glad you had a lovely holiday

  20. Hi Kate. Michelle's idea on the doll hair is perfect if you can't bear to pull it out. If you can, then line up all the strands under your sewing machine and then stitch through them to create a middle parting and then hand stitch that to the head. I would recommend giving her pigtails or a plait to secure it in place above the ears. I've just started an Olearia too but have had to pull it back and start again because I messed up. Ho hum. I'll get there in the end! Congrats on the ric rac feature!

  27. I started to make a doll when I was small - about 8, I think. My mum gave me something that looked like a latch hook for the hair. I can't remember how it worked though...

  28. Looks like you have been busy on your return (LOL at him not wanted to be an organic cane farmer - that would have been pretty cool and tell him there is money in canefarming) Love all of your little projects - I agree - dont unpack (I still have not unpacked from our last camp trip - opps!)

  29. ....and you're suprised YOU miss things... look at all that I have missed! Loving that ricrac, cute!

As for market vs online - I say both! I think your stuff & your attitude are PERFECT for a lovely handmade market, but I also want to be able to buy your stuff online teehee. I think, and since I have no experience in either, this is, obviously, my expert opinion, the best plan would be to make stock for your market date, to market to market, then list anything left over online after....

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.
