Honeymoon.

This is Alec.

Alec is standing on what he calls reception rock. The only place in his workplace that he can get reception on his mobile phone.

Alec was our glass bottom boat driver and tour guide last Monday morning on the Ningaloo Reef.

Alec was an awesome guide. He was funny and interesting and inclusive and he didn't sound like he was reading from a script even though he has been running this tour for nine years.

Yes!!! You read that right. Alec has been running glass bottom boat, diving and snorkeling tours on the Ningaloo reef for nine years. And he loves it. He told us that he feels like he is still in his work honeymoon phase. He gets excited about coming to work every single day. He loves it so much that he has no minimum bookings, he'll run a tour for one person. He loves it so much that he didn't get offended when Miss Pepper asked very loudly why he talked so much. He thought it was funny.

Although the whole reef experience was pretty mind blowing, what really left me thinking was Alec and his attitude to work and life.

I want to wake up in the morning, every morning and be excited about my day. I want to feel lucky and love what I do.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

I remember before we left Daylesford waking up in the morning and lying in bed making lists of what I had to do that day. Instead of enjoying it, I felt like I was in a rush to get as much done before I hopped back into bed that night.

I don't know what that's all about because truly I am living the life I have always wanted to live. I have a gorgeous family, I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and our business is ethical and sustainable and wonderful, I feel proud of what we do.

I should feel like every day is a honeymoon.

I have no idea whether it's a state of mind or whether I have to change some stuff around and simplify things but honeymoon is the end result I am aiming for.

Honeymoon: romance, happiness, excitement, love, fulfilment, good-will...

As far as I know this might be the only chance I get at life, so why would I want to waste one day feeling anything but.

It's something to aim for anyway.

What do you think? Do you love what you do? Do you think it's possible to feel excited about your day to day? Do you strive for honeymoon? Have you got any tips for me?

Happy travels. x

  1. Some days I feel depressed and this is made worse when I look around me and see everything I love right here. Why aren't I always happy? This is not to say I am not happy, just that sometimes I feel like I am pulled in every direction at once.

I don't have any advice here for you at all, but I hope you find the answer. I hope I do too.

I don't want a honeymoon feeling, I want the deep love you settle into after that.

  2. Great post, this is exactly how I want to feel and be. I have absolutely no idea how to achieve it, but like you I'm living my dream life. It troubles me that i don't feel like Alec. I'll be reading with interest how you achieve this and any replies you get here. I'm hoping that it's just a change of mindset, although that in its self isn't easy.

    cheers Kate

  3. Oh this is resonating with me so. so. much! Ringing church bells, choirs singing, firewords, that sort of resonate!

We are yet to find 'it' - the wake up in the morning, jump out of bed and throw yourself at the world. We ALMOST had it, but not quite...so we went looking further, and in actual fact took a huge (depressing) step backwards. Now we're hitting the road similar to you to try and find it...or reflect at the very least, reassess and come back refreshed to find 'it'.

I get what you're saying though - it seems that you should be in honeymoon...but somehow...you're not. I get that. Totally.

  4. Lucky Alec!

I think you need to experience the bad days to truly appreciate the fantastic days.

If the bad days outnumber the good, changes need to be made.

    xx

  5. Like you kate, I do love my life. I'm living the life I always hoped for. I suppose sometimes it's easy to loose sight of the big picture when things get so crazy busy. Honeymoon phase would be a great way to live, definately something to strive for. Starting with simplifying & taking time to breathe, thanks for the reminder...

  6. Kate I think you expressed this sentiment so well and I agree. I have just returned from 10 weeks away from the everyday and have been trying to make changes to get to this honeymoon point it may take a while but would love to be in that place

  7. I like the way your posts are going (only been following a week or three now). It's true, to reflect on what life we have and actually appreciate it. I am a houswife, I have the luxury of staying at home, taking my boys to school and back, doing the extra-murals with them, and not being dependant on some afterschool centre, and yet, I totally know what your talking about, the rushing through the day. I will go on honeymoon now, thank you.

  8. I think nowadays, people just put far too much pressure on themselves to get things done, conform, strive for more out of life etc etc. The end result is that we are all far too stressed to enjoy what we've got. We all need to just take the pressure off a little and enjoy the simple things in life. I'm sure we'd all be so much happier in the long run. xx

  9. Sometimes you don't know the whole story though. To have this honeymoon life there may have been other sacrifices. Like not having a long term relationship, forgoing other responsibilities , like raising children or being around for family when they need you. Not to cast dispersions on dear Alec. Just know many men like him.

Happiness. I at my happiest when I am doing a regular practice of meditation. No matter what is going on.

It can be a pretty elusive thing.

  10. Really my life is pretty bloody good. I am able to be a stay at home mum and pursue my crafts as much as possible with little financial pressure.

Yet I would be one of the first to say how much I envy people who can do what they love for a living, who have a heaven-sent talent that they get to share and use every day- and get paid for it- and get personal graitification in the process.

But for the life of me, I can't tell you what would make me feel that my life was like that. Perhaps I am missing that special talent. I know that I struggle to be a good mum on a daily basis. Maybe the feelings of inadequacy on that front is what holds me back.

Another great post, Kate. Travel safe. x

  11. I absolutely believe we can all feel just like Alec does everyday, and it doesn't even matter what we are doing with our lives, it is just a state of mind. If you can wake up everyday and feel truly grateful for what you have, you will feel happy, and the happier you feel, the more there is to be grateful for. It isn't easy but the more you practice it the easier it gets. If you haven't read or seen The Secret I recommend it. It's a little wierd and corny but i believe gratitude is the way to achieving this honeymoon feeling in our lives all of the time x

  14. I know what you are saying,my feeling is that we are not made to be in a state of complete happiness all the time. I try to just appreciate the good feelings when they arise, and i know the rotten feelings, moods etc are just a stepping stone to the better times and try to enjoy them. I find for myself if i can do a good deed or say nice things to people it makes me feel good...and sometimes it comes back to me in a nice way. Another thing i have laernt is that everybody has some thing which niggles at them and causes them un-happiness. Thank you so much for sharing love reading your blog Elizabeth

  15. Dear Kate,
when your children will be older you will have that feeling of 'honeymoon' when you get out of bed. Of course now you have too much to do, and you gratefully fall exhausted into your bed at night.
It is a phase of life, so many responsibilities, the children to fed, drive around, in a word: to grow. And your role as a wife...it is a lot. Be patient, trust me : one day you will enjoy the honeymoon feeling with life every day.

  16. This is a good question Kate. I actually heard a segment on the ABC the other day about the elusive Happiness and the pursuit of it. No real answer there I'm afraid, but we do tend to feel guilty if we don't feel Happy...... and to feel the Honeymoon feeling every day would be just fantastic I think.
Sorry I haven't really answered anything at all, but I feel that you should be pretty darn happy about Now! cheers wendy

  17. Hi Kate
its definitely a state of mind. and the mind is a tricky thing. theres a book by wayne dyer called the shift that ive been reading. its very interesting...you might want to check it out. enjoy your sunny beachy days, you lucky family x x x x

  18. I often think the people who are sea people have it, the ocean has some sort of happiness effect. I've been thinking about reading that book 'The Happiness Project' Pip LIncoln from Meet Me a Mikes read it and liked it and posted about it.
I'm pretty happy, I'd just love to have our house in order, to feel like I could sit back, exhale and just have no house work to do for a minute.

  19. I totally agree. I'm always going on about the need for people to do what they love and be passionate about what they do... I bore my girls senseless about it ;) I'd rather they were pole dancers who loved their job than doctors/lawyers doing it for the money. "Yeah yeah mum, you want us to be pole dancers, we get it." Hmm.
Trying to take my own advice every day too (not the pole dancing!), but of course it's not always that easy, is it? ;) Just as important to try though - that's what it's all about. Kx

  22. I used to think that it was okay to be a plodder; but now... now I think I'd rather be loving what I do. I don't need to feel perfectly content in every moment of every day. I would like to wake up and not dread the day. Or spend hours dreaming up wild illnesses that prevent my attendance at work that day. I would like to think that I do something I love, something I am passionate about. I would like to think I made a contribution doing that thing. I would like to look back on the sum of my life and think that there was more happiness than not.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Kate,
"loving what you do" is a theme that Steve Jobs spoke about in his Stanford graduation lecture a couple of years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc
I get the feeling you can move mountains if you love what you do.
But not sure about the honeymoon feeling for a daily job. A honeymoon is the way it is because it's an exception, its intense, its that excitement of the first rush of married life, before you go into the sustainable every-day. Not sure I'd like to live my relationships in full honeymoon mode all the time - same goes for my job! It would be beautiful, but too exhausting ;) I would prefer to have calm, harmonious, satisfying, even-keeled, yet creative work that I enjoy, punctuated with short intense moments of pure excitement, joy, gratitude....

  24. great post kate. i think everyone could relate. i think it's as simple as this- the not so good days make the great days shine.
if every day was great how would we know what great felt like? it would just be bog ordinary

  25. Just let go of the idea that life should be perfect, ALL the time. All seaons are made special due to the passing of the previous one or the anticipation of the coming one. We just need to remember to enjoy the moment and people we love even when not "perfect"
(Oh... And no housework :-) )

  27. Hello Kate - and many other ladies who commented on Kate's blog today. This is Alek (Alec). Many thanks for your kind comments ;) Our family feel extremely lucky and fortunate to live in the paradise of Exmouth.

On the rare occassions however, a nagging thought does cross my mind as the utopia of Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef is very much different from the "real world" out there... How do we prepare our 3 year old son Kuba and 9 month old daughter Klaudia for "real life" out there? Their life IS the reef and the beach.

While my wonderful wife Gina and i have a comparison scale, having lived in several very different parts of the world, our children don't. We feel that it is important for them to be exposed to it so they can gain a better appreciation of the paradise here, but at the same time we're aware of the dangers and don't want them to get hurt. Catch 22. Time will tell.

ps. Honeymoon everyday? Bring it on! ;) I appreciate it with respect.

Thanks so much for stopping by...

I do read every single comment you leave and appreciate it very much, but I should let you know that I can be a wee bit on the useless side when replying to comments, that's just me, everyday life sometimes gets in the way....so I'll apologise now, just in case.
